Narcolepsy
Timing: Take in the morning
Range: 200mg to 400mg daily
Starting dose: Usually 200mg daily
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Timing: Take in the morning
Range: 200mg to 400mg daily
Note: Used as adjunct to CPAP therapy
Shift Work Sleep Disorder
Timing: 1 hour before work shift
Range: 200mg daily
Note: Take before start of work shift
Special Populations
Elderly Patients (≥65 years)
Consider starting with a lower dose due to potential decreased clearance. Monitor closely for adverse effects. Some elderly patients may require dose reduction to 100mg daily.
Hepatic Impairment
Mild to Moderate: Reduce dose by 50%
Severe: Use with extreme caution, consider significant dose reduction
Renal Impairment
No dosage adjustment typically needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use caution in severe renal impairment.
Administration Guidelines
🕐 Timing
- For narcolepsy and OSA: Take in the morning upon awakening
- For SWSD: Take approximately 1 hour before work shift
- Avoid taking late in the day to prevent sleep interference
🍽️ Food Interactions
- Can be taken with or without food
- Food may delay absorption by approximately 1 hour
- High-fat meals may reduce peak concentration
💊 Tablet Information
- Swallow tablets whole with water
- Do not crush, chew, or split tablets
- Available in 100mg and 200mg strengths
Missed Dose Instructions
For Narcolepsy/OSA (Morning Dose)
If you miss your morning dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's late afternoon. If it's late in the day, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule the next day.
For Shift Work Sleep Disorder
If you miss taking modafinil before your shift and your shift has already started, you may still take it, but be aware it may affect your ability to sleep after your shift ends.
